La pittrice taiwanese presenta la sua prima personale in uno spazio d’arte da MADE4ART, nel cuore di Brera, Milano.

Dal 20 ottobre al 3 novembre 2026 MADE4ART, spazio per l’arte e la cultura di Via Ciovasso 17, presenta LIBRA, prima mostra personale in uno spazio d’arte di Ko-Lan Lai (Lan), pittrice di Taipei, Taiwan. L’inaugurazione si terrà martedì 20 ottobre 2026, dalle ore 18 alle 20, alla presenza dell’artista. La mostra è a cura di Vittorio Schieroni ed Elena Amodeo. In mostra venti dipinti ad acrilico su tela di piccolo formato, la maggior parte di 20 x 20 cm con tre lavori di 15 x 15 cm: diciassette realizzati a Milano nel corso del 2026, Libra, portato a termine a Ortigia, Siracusa – Sicilia, Noi e Lontano, completati a Taipei, Taiwan.

Cinque minuti, un mondo intero

La mostra condivide il proprio principio con una poesia di Thomas Masters, presentata accanto ai dipinti in italiano e inglese:

…Il mondo è fatto di attimi, alcuni sentiti e pochi compresi; alcuni reali, gli altri, qualcos’altro, vedo il tuo viso per cinque minuti, e creo un mondo intero… …The world is about moments, some felt and few understood; some real, the others, something else, I see your face for 5 minutes, a whole world I create…

È il principio esatto di questa pittura. Non l’evento, ma l’attimo; non ciò che viene compreso, ma ciò che si sente prima che la comprensione arrivi. Guardare per cinque minuti un viso sconosciuto basta a costruire un mondo – e ogni tela della serie è uno di quei mondi: piccolo, intero, nato da un istante che chiunque altro avrebbe lasciato passare. Il formato ridotto è la misura giusta di un attimo. Chi guarda deve avvicinarsi.

Il quotidiano come materia
Questi dipinti nascono da una vita minima e regolare. Arrivata a Milano, l’artista ha vissuto da sola in un piccolo appartamento, dentro una casa silenziosa; usciva a camminare la mattina presto, nel pomeriggio, verso sera, di notte – talvolta lungo gli stessi percorsi, talvolta cambiando strada. È in quelle passeggiate che è venuta a conoscere l’agosto milanese: le serrande abbassate, le strade deserte, una città svuotata dei suoi abitanti e restituita alla luce e alle ombre. Vivere da soli in un paese che non è il proprio significa guardare molto e parlare poco. Da quella posizione vengono le scene di LIBRA, tutte concentrate su un istante: una figura sulla soglia, una coppia in riva al mare, una stanza a mezza luce alla fine del giorno, due donne che condividono una confidenza, un bicchiere di vino rosso. Frammenti di una giornata qualunque, visti da chi è di passaggio e per questo li vede più nitidamente.

La figura e lo spazio
La figura umana è dipinta minuscola dentro uno spazio vastissimo – sola o accompagnata, sotto una luna che osserva. In una gamma calda di terre e di toni marini, l’artista dipinge una silenziosa accettazione della fragilità umana, del passaggio, e delle distanze che restano fra le persone anche nella vicinanza. Su alcune tele il colore si fa dichiarazione: i forti contrasti di rosso, blu e giallo portano la riflessione dell’artista sul patriarcato, l’affermazione della forza interiore delle donne e una comprensione affettuosa della gente comune – di coloro che, attraversata ogni stagione della vita, restano saldi e coraggiosi. Il mondo visivo di Ko-Lan Lai è plasmato dal cinema non meno che dalla pittura. Michelangelo Antonioni e Federico Fellini sono riferimenti fondamentali, e l’artista torna di continuo al Fellini Satyricon (1969), attratta dal suo sguardo che non si sottrae all’avidità umana né al rapporto teso fra noi e il mondo che ci circonda.
Le figure spaesate che ricorrono nei suoi dipinti sono anche il suo riflesso: chi ha lasciato casa per inseguire un sogno e resta in piedi, silenzioso, davanti allo sfondo della città.

L’artista

Ko-Lan Lai (Lan) è una pittrice di Taipei, Taiwan, che lavora principalmente con acrilico su tela. Ha vissuto a lungo in Italia (a Firenze, a Bologna, e sull’isola di Ortigia a Siracusa – Sicilia) e oggi divide la propria vita di lavoro fra Taipei e la Sicilia. Accanto a LIBRA porta avanti la serie MOON, di lungo corso. Firma le proprie opere come Lan.

Taiwanese painter presents her first solo art space exhibition at MADE4ART, in the heart of Brera, Milan.

From 20 October to 3 November 2026, MADE4ART, the space for art and culture at Via Ciovasso 17, presents LIBRA, the first solo art space exhibition by Ko-Lan Lai (Lan), a painter from Taipei, Taiwan. The opening reception takes place on Tuesday 20 October 2026, 6 – 8 pm, in the presence of the artist. The exhibition is curated by Vittorio Schieroni and Elena Amodeo.
On view are twenty small-format acrylic paintings on canvas, most measuring 20 × 20 cm with three works measuring 15 × 15 cm: seventeen made in Milan during 2026, Libra, completed in Ortigia, Siracusa – Sicily, Us and Far Away, finished in Taipei, Taiwan.

Five minutes, a whole world

The exhibition shares its principle with a poem by Thomas Masters, shown alongside the paintings in Italian and English:

This is the exact principle of the paintings. Not the event, but the moment; not the part that is understood, but the part already felt before understanding arrives. Five minutes looking at an unfamiliar face is enough to build a world – and every canvas in the series is one of those worlds: small, complete, born out of an instant anyone else would have let pass. The reduced format is the right measure for a moment. The viewer has to come closer.

The everyday as material
These paintings come out of a minimal, regular life. After arriving in Milan, the artist lived alone in a small apartment inside a quiet house; she went out walking early in the morning, in the afternoon, towards evening, at night – sometimes along the same routes, sometimes taking a different way. It was on those walks that she came to know the Milanese August: shutters pulled down, deserted streets, a city emptied of its inhabitants and handed back to light and shadow. To live alone in a country that is not your own is to look a great deal and to speak very little. The scenes of LIBRA come from that position, each of them concentrated on a single instant: a figure at a threshold, a couple at the edge of the sea, a half-lit room at the end of the day, two women sharing a confidence, a glass of red wine. Fragments of an ordinary day, seen by someone passing through, and seen the more clearly for it.

The figure and the space
The human figure is painted very small within a vast space – alone or accompanied, beneath a watching moon. In a warm range of earth and marine tones, the artist paints a silent acceptance of human fragility, of passage, and of the distances that remain between people even in closeness. On certain canvases the colour becomes a statement: strong contrasts of red, blue and yellow carry the artist’s reflection on patriarchy, her affirmation of women’s inner strength, and a tender understanding of ordinary people – those who, having passed through every stage of life, remain strong and full of courage. Ko-Lan Lai’s visual world is shaped by cinema no less than by painting. Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini are essential references, and she returns again and again to Fellini Satyricon (1969), drawn to its refusal to look away from human greed and from the strained relationship between ourselves and the world around us.
The displaced figures that recur in her paintings are also her own reflection: someone who left home to chase a dream and stands in silence against the backdrop of the city.

About the artist

Ko-Lan Lai (Lan) is a painter from Taipei, Taiwan, working principally in acrylic on canvas. She has lived for long periods in Italy (in Florence, in Bologna and on the island of Ortigia in Siracusa – Sicily) and today divides her working life between Taipei and Sicily. Alongside LIBRA she continues her long-running series MOON. She signs her work as Lan.
